Passport Travel-Ready Checker
Don't get turned away at the gate. Since Brexit, UK passports must meet two rules for EU travel โ and loads of people get caught out. Pop in your dates and check in seconds. On your device, nothing saved.
Checks the EU/Schengen rules (issued under 10 years before entry, and valid 3+ months after you leave). It's a guide โ always confirm the entry requirements for your specific destination on gov.uk before you travel.
The UK passport rules for EU travel (post-Brexit)
Since Brexit, a UK passport that's still 'in date' isn't automatically valid for travel to the EU, and people get turned away at the airport every week because of it. Two rules apply for the EU/Schengen area: your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before the day you arrive, and it must still be valid for at least 3 months after the day you leave. This tool checks both against your travel dates in seconds.
The 10-year rule catches people out because older passports sometimes had extra months added on โ those extra months beyond 10 years no longer count for EU travel. Enter your passport's issue and expiry dates plus your trip dates, and you'll see clearly whether you're good to go or need to renew.
It all runs on your device with nothing saved. It covers the EU/Schengen rules โ many other countries instead require six months' validity beyond your trip, so always double-check your specific destination's entry requirements on gov.uk.
Frequently asked questions
What are the passport rules for travelling to Europe from the UK?โ
For the EU/Schengen area, your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before your arrival date, and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave.
Why does the 10-year rule catch people out?โ
Some older UK passports had extra months added to their expiry when renewed early. Those extra months over 10 years are ignored for EU travel, so a passport that looks 'in date' can still be refused.
How long does it take to renew a UK passport?โ
Allow several weeks, and longer during busy spring and summer periods. Don't book non-refundable travel until your new passport has arrived. Check current times on gov.uk.
Do these rules apply to non-EU countries?โ
No โ they're for the EU/Schengen area. Many other countries require at least six months' validity beyond your trip, so check the entry rules for your specific destination.
Is my passport information saved?โ
No. The check happens entirely on your device and nothing is stored or sent.
